The book covers instructional design practice in part one to include the role of a learning designer and how that can encompass many titles, responsibilities, and skills. Part two includes instructional design knowledge, learning theories, the instructional design process, and instructional activities and managing stakeholders, clients, and the project team. Including Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a very beneficial reminder that autonomous environments may not always produce the results and outcomes that are needed but it relies on the learner to be ready and willing to learn.

In a facade materiality study, three concepts featuring an aluminum skin were drafted and compared. The preferred option implements a tapered aluminum fin, while the alternatives propose a bulkier fin with more dimension and a design where the aluminum fins are tubular. These are some areas where the graphic design industry is going to witness tremendous growth and creativity in future.

Since its preliminary design submission for the competition, Perkins&Will’s concept has proffered a building that embodies the shape (and spirit) of stars and interstellar elements. In Washington D.C., new details have emerged about the Bezos Learning Center, an education and cultural center coming to the site of the demolished Gyo Obata–designed restaurant pavilion not far from the National Mall. To survive the competition in graphic design, you must think ahead and produce visionary, up-to-date designs. To survive this cutthroat competition, you not only need to be updated but also need to stay ahead. According to a September survey from higher education-focused magazine Intelligent, half of universities were using AI in their admissions process.

The very focused chapters make it possible to update information on an on-going basis whilst continuing access to the literature reviews that wouldn’t change. These updates would be straightforward and easy to implement by simply updating the affected chapters. It is not uncommon however for educators to think about how they want to teach a concept, rather that if it’s possible to measure understanding through that specific activity. Luckily newer and more advanced technologies provide very granular learner data, and similar to Backward Design, Learning design encourages teams to plan and design for the data they want to track when creating a learning experience. This will ensure you have what you need to check learner competency, run a blended class, or to further iterate on your existing lesson design.

He set out to create a machine learning-enabled system that could help with the admissions process, ultimately meant to direct employees’ energy and resources toward students in an earlier and more effective way. Leading the way from SU faculty will be Dr. Brian Flores, with a focus in literacy and deeper learning; Dr. Gurupriya Ramanathan, with a focus in early childhood science methods; and Niya Brown, a former Worcester County teacher, with a focus in how to motivate learners. At Smart Sparrow we work really hard to create space for creativity and exploration, in order to produce extraordinary work. We know now that designing for the digital medium is not like designing for face-to-face, hence it’s important to follow a process fit for purpose. In addition we embed a philosophy into our courseware design & production process and hence view our process as a set of guidelines.

This is followed by an introduction to the online Learning Module and a collection of possible learner activities, sorted under the Learning by Design Knowledge Processes. We then discuss strategies for Assessment of student performance using the Learning by Design approach. Recently the concept of “Learning Design” has gained momentum in the education space, mostly through discussions at conferences, webinars, ebooks, and more. Being topical though doesn’t make it new, in fact the concept has been evolving since the early 2000’s, deeply rooted in Design Thinking. “ and to carefully consider “What is the best way for my learners to learn and understand this concept?

Deeper learning is supported when students design and create an artifact that requires understanding and application of knowledge. DBL activity supports iteration as students create, assess, and redesign their projects. The work's complexity often requires collaboration and specialized roles, providing students with the opportunity to become "experts" in a particular area. In contrast, the backward design approach has instructors consider the learning goals of the course first.

Understand why your child is struggling with reading and writing and how to get the results your child can feel good about. Improve outcomes with an integrated structured literacy solution, from assessment to intervention; all tiers, all grades. The preferred option proposes a design that leans more into the spiral concept realized in the footprint of the new building, while the alternative follows the orthogonal layout in line with the design realized for Gyo Obata’s 1988 landscape. Inside, circulation centers around a multistory spine that embodies the spiral nature of galaxies.

Data is very powerful in that it gives instructors control over evaluating the effectiveness of the lesson and it’s design, including deciding the right changes to make for refinement for the next cohort –the hallmark of iterative design. Born around 1990’s Learning Sciences is an interdisciplinary field that looks to progress scientific, humanistic and critical theoretical understanding of learning. However in some instances “research” can be more or less formal, frequent, and elaborate. As previously stated, backward design is beneficial to instructors because it innately encourages intentionality during the design process. It continually encourages the instructor to establish the purpose of doing something before implementing it into the curriculum. Therefore, backward design is an effective way of providing guidance for instruction and designing lessons, units, and courses.

It shifts the focus of education from simply delivering content to molding the full instructor-learner experience. Dr. West’s research focuses on developing educational institutions that support 21st century learning. This includes teaching interdisciplinary and collaborative creativity and design thinking skills, personalizing learning through open badges, increasing access through open education, and developing social learning communities in online and blended environments.

He worked to adjust the data-gathering process over the next couple years, and his timeline coincided with an opportunity to work with the Chicago technology consulting firm SPR to use machine-learning models during the application process. The resulting project cost over $120,000 to implement, and was funded through building materials donations, local community groups such as the Raleigh Host Lions Club, a small grant from the NC Youth Outdoor Engagement Commission and from grassroots fundraising efforts. “Students don’t get to choose their teachers,” said Valerie Sakimura, executive director at DFI. “Students of color and students in underserved communities are more likely to be in the classroom of a novice teacher. Human-centered design is a practical, repeatable approach to arriving at innovative solutions. Explore this step-by-step guide to unleash your creativity, putting the people you serve at the center of your design process.

It also helps with planning for class size and sections, with SAIC officials having a more accurate outlook on which students are likely to end up on campus. Both O’Connell and Devoe were quick to point out the technology is not being used to dictate which students should and should not be accepted into the institution. Instead, the data illuminate the likelihood of the already-accepted students choosing to attend the university. He admitted that the machine-learning attempt “didn’t knock it out of the park on the first try,” undermined by data that was not very robust.

Here are some major reasons why it's important to stay ahead in graphic design. The increased influence of AI in graphic design has opened the door to many unexplored professional opportunities in this field. Every single minute, something new is being created in the field of graphic design. If you want to become an expert in this field, it's crucial for you to stay updated with all the latest trends in graphic design. Brooklyn Scotto, former director and Katherine Brooks, current director spoke passionately about the importance of teamwork to make this design a reality. “This project was born out of a simple yet powerful idea to create a space where children of all ages, regardless of their circumstance, can come together to play, learn and experience the joy of childhood,” said Brooks.

As a prospective student, you may not be familiar with all the terminology, but you should be able to determine if the curriculum offers a cohesive series of relevant courses that builds toward mastery in a specific design discipline. Is the structure of the curriculum designed to help you develop a professional competency? As attractive as this might seem, having too many program options can lead to the development of too few professional competencies upon graduation. In light of restrictions and social distancing, schools were burdened with distance learning and, at the same time, still needed to find a way to recruit students.

While lacking in cultural experience and amenities of the big city, design programs situated in suburban or rural areas provide students a less distracting environment that is conducive to learning. The quality of a design program will be evident in the caliber of students admitted and graduates produced. If a design school accepts all applicants, regardless of qualification, the quality of education is going to be lower than that offered at a design school that only admits qualified applicants. ACE convened a technical review panel in September 2022 to guide the design of the new classification.

This is the first time SAIC is using AI and machine learning in admissions, but many institutions across the nation have turned toward the increasingly pervasive technology. He added other higher education institutions have begun reaching out to ask for similar tools or models that could be used for other purposes, such as predicting the likelihood of students dropping out in their first academic term. He admitted that the machine-learning attempt “didn’t knock it out of the park on the first try,” undermined by data that was not very robust. SAIC, upon receiving the machine-learning model for free, can utilize it as long as it sees fit. It may upgrade eventually, but for now, O’Connell is content with taking things slowly—in contrast to the normal rhythm of the quick-moving tech world. SPR and SAIC began working on the model in the first half of 2023 and began to utilize it in the latter half of the year.

It concludes with the statement that collegial, sponsored, open, and commercial are the four precursor forms of international higher education by tracing the history, and these four established forms are not mutually exclusive but highly interrelated. Higher education bears the responsibility of empowering learners in a connected community by helping people develop through international mobility. Contemporary online forms of open education and commercial forms of higher education pave the way for occupying an enduring place in higher education. Connectivity, rather than separation, has the potential to promote the prosperity and sustainability development of higher education. Therefore, Coates advocates the connected higher education design framework to design possible futures and elaborates on the characteristics and the reform directions of higher education. Student-centered storytelling that helps students envision themselves in your school and inspire them to dream is a powerful tool for higher-ed website design.

The study, published in Lancet Regional Health – Europe, found that the risk of second primary cancers was higher in people living in areas of greater socioeconomic deprivation. The overall industrial design appears to be similar to the previous generation models, with a glass-metal sandwich design. All four devices are likely to include USB-C ports for charging and data transfer. We believe these three principles guide every approach when designing a structure, a place, a home. What clients, principal designers and principal contractors must do to follow the Building Safety Act 2022 and the Building Safety Regulator (BSR). Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK, with about 56,000 people being told they have it each year.

It would miss the points that change is required at all levels ranging from individual, instructional, institutional, governmental, to global. More importantly, higher education is full of complexity, for example, Chapter 6 designs higher education by acknowledging the market-orientation property; however, Chapter 10 proposes the design by valuing higher education's nature of public good. This paradox reveals the key problem of this book, which is that it only focuses on the top research-oriented universities without addressing the typology of higher education design. As regards higher education, institutions are the instigators of further globalization and internationalization for connecting people across regional, national, and cultural boundaries (Tight, 2021). Chapter 4 describes the international higher education design framework in detail to help readers understand the interconnected nature of future higher education.

We have seen many clients start with the larger agencies and "solutions" that reach a fast limit when they are in need of a more personalized level of assistance. Whether you are looking to hire, fire, or need guidance for workers' compensation, we are with you during every step. We do what we do because we are vested in your success and take pride in your accomplishments and compliance.

However, SAIC does seem to be the first among art- and design-focused institutions to utilize the technology in admissions. While art students typically have to submit a portfolio in the application process, Lavoe stressed the machine-learning technology is not judging the portfolio in any way. Raw, brutalist design is the UCLA School of Architecture and Urban Design sub-brand signature style.

If you believe, as we do, that we can and should design the next iteration of higher education, then we invite you to read the book and join us in that conversation. With a continual flood of information, sometimes young people are overwhelmed with the countless options available for their future. Universities that use story to inspire students to find a way to connect with students and shine a guiding light on their education journey. Even better, unique, bold, visual storytelling challenges students to face their future and compels them to react. John Hopkins University uses catchy slogans that are not only inspiring but captivating.

We developed a tool we call includes.py which measures the transitive bytes per source file. It is written purely in Python and does not use Clang, which makes it fast to run—usually in just a couple of seconds. The human error component has largely been taken out of the equation.” So, why can’t every organization use their existing e-bidding platform to evaluate design-build contracts?

However, having a lot of forward declarations can affect readability and also makes the codebase less searchable since a given symbol would appear in numerous places. The tool provides the information we need to run this in our Continuous Integration (CI) system and definitively determine the increase in bytes per source file that a given PR causes. If there are significant regressions, we issue warnings in PRs to prevent them from being merged initially. Our collaborative design approach develops partnerships across disciplines to create projects that are innovative, practical and cost-effective. Always adapting and evolving, our buildings strive to craft an individual response to site, budget and, of course, client – so there’s no such thing as a signature building, and no such thing as two similar clients.

E-Bidding platforms like our own Bid Express have begun to incorporate scoring and evaluation features to make them flexible enough to use for both design-build and unit price contracts. In this article, we’ll review the differences between these two contract types and outline how e-bidding software is being used for design-build proposal evaluation. The Urban Design Principles represent a set of values to be expressed in the built environment and set a direction for the city of Los Angeles. These principles are about defining the space between buildings and not just the space within property lines.

This image uses a lot of proportion and scale to emphasize the different sizes of elements. It gives a sense of clarity to the size of Big Ben in the distance to the market stalls that are closer. Proportion refers to the relative size and scale of elements in the design. It's essential for making things look three-dimensional and also adds direction and hierarchy.

Meta Horizon OS combines the core technologies that power today’s mixed reality experiences with a suite of features that put social presence at the center of the platform. It’s also worth noting that a source file should never include a Fwd.h file. Forward declarations are only valuable in header files where they prevent unnecessary header includes. The elements of design are the building blocks of visual art, including point, line, shape, and space.

The path to becoming a Certified Professional Building Designer or CPBD is achievable and rewarding for many people. As a building designer, you could be invaluable in assisting people not familiar with the construction and home remodeling business. Although you are not legally required to pass the same registration exams demanded of architects, you'll want to become certified in your own field. Even if your state doesn't require certification, you'll be more marketable with professional certification, just like medical doctors become board certified in a specialty after medical school. One way to detect and prevent a regression in the number of bytes sent to the compiler is to measure it and inform feature branch authors that their change may have a significant impact on C++ build times.

The exam questions will cover many phases of construction, design, and problem-solving. The three-level southern façade combines Palladian and neoclassical architectural styles. The south portico was completed in 1824.[33] At the center of the southern façade is a neoclassical projected bow of three bays. The bow is flanked by five bays, the windows of which, as on the north façade, have alternating segmented and pointed pediments at first-floor level. The bow has a ground-floor double staircase leading to an Ionic colonnaded loggia and the Truman Balcony, built in 1946.[33] The more modern third floor is hidden by a balustraded parapet and plays no part in the composition of the façade. The building’s history begins in 1792, when a public competition was held to choose a design for a presidential residence in the new capital city of Washington. Thomas Jefferson, later the country’s third president (1801–09), using the pseudonymous initials “A.Z.,” was among those who submitted drawings, but Irish American architect James Hoban won the commission (and a $500 prize) with his plan for a Georgian mansion in the Palladian style. The structure was to have three floors and more than 100 rooms and would be built in sandstone imported from quarries along Aquia Creek in Virginia. Labourers, including local enslaved people, were housed in temporary huts built on the north side of the premises. They were joined by skilled stonemasons from Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1793. Because of crowding within the executive mansion itself, President Theodore Roosevelt had all work offices relocated to the newly constructed West Wing in 1901.

The White House bowling alley was given as a gift to President Truman and was later moved to the basement of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

Today, the residence includes six levels with 132 rooms, including 16 family and guest rooms and 35 bathrooms, and is spread over 55,000 square feet. The White House has been home to every president from John Adams to Joe Biden, and it is an enduring symbol of democracy and one of the most recognizable buildings in the world, attracting 500,000 visitors annually. In 1842 the visit to the United States of the English novelist Charles Dickens brought an official invitation to the White House.

A Proclamation on Education and Sharing Day, USA, 2024

In the minds of most Americans, the building was not a “palace” from which the president ruled but merely a temporary office and residence from which he served the people he governed. The White House belonged to the people, not the president, and the president occupied it only for as long as the people allowed him to stay. The idea of a president refusing to leave the White House after losing an election or an impeachment trial was unthinkable. The East Wing, which contains additional office space, was added to the White House in 1942. Among its uses, the East Wing has intermittently housed the offices and staff of the first lady and the White House Social Office.

The White House has a form on its website on which one can fill out their email address. The form asks for the message type, full name, email, phone number, address and provides a text box to compose the message. The President and the First Lady strongly encourage all Americans to consider making contributions to their favorite charities in lieu of gifts to the First Family. And, please note, the White House is unable to accept cash, checks, bonds, gift certificates, foreign currency, or other monetary equivalents. The employee primarily performs executive, administrative or professional duties.

According to whitehouse.gov, members of the American public can tour the White House by scheduling a visit through their member of Congress. Citizens of a foreign countries can arrange tours through their embassy. Contrary to a popular myth that the building was painted white to hide scorch marks after the fire in 1814, the residence was first painted white in 1798 to protect the exterior from weather damage. “There had been a pool inside the White House added by Franklin Roosevelt that he would use as exercise for his polio, but later, Gerald Ford wanted an outdoor pool,” says Fling.

After his calls at the White House door went unanswered, Dickens let himself in and walked through the mansion from room to room on the lower and upper floors. Finally coming upon a room filled with nearly two dozen people, he was shocked and appalled to see many of them spitting on the carpet. Dickens later wrote, “I take it for granted the Presidential housemaids have high wages.” Until the Civil War, however, most White House servants were enslaved people. Moreover, the wages of all White House employees—as well as the expenses for running the White House, including staging official functions—were paid for by the president. Not until 1909 did Congress provide appropriations to pay White House servants.

Hoban’s reconstruction included the addition of east and west terraces on the main building’s flanks; a semicircular south portico and a colonnaded north portico were added in the 1820s. The mansion quickly became a focal point of the new federal city and was symbolically linked to the United States Capitol by way of Pennsylvania Avenue. Following his inauguration in March 1801, Jefferson became the second president to reside in the executive mansion. In keeping with his ardent republicanism, he opened the house to public visitation each morning, a tradition that was continued (during peacetime) by all his successors.

The Neoclassical design of the White House is based primarily on architectural concepts inherited from the Roman architect Vitruvius and the Venetian architect Andrea Palladio. Our first president, George Washington, selected the site for the White House in 1791. The following year, the cornerstone was laid and a design submitted by Irish-born architect James Hoban was chosen.

Rosalynn Carter, in 1977, was the first to place her personal office in the East Wing and to formally call it the "Office of the First Lady". The East Wing was built during World War II in order to hide the construction of an underground bunker to be used in emergencies. The bunker has come to be known as the Presidential Emergency Operations Center. Nine proposals were submitted for the new presidential residence with the award going to Irish-American architect James Hoban. Organizing a protest or rally to contact the President of the United States is one way to get your message heard. It’s important, however, that you understand the rules and regulations for holding such an event near White House grounds. For example, in 2010 former President Barack Obama was presented with an American flag from a non-profit organization called “Operation Gratitude”.

Hoban returned to rebuild the residence, and while work was completed in 1817, he continued to work on additions for several more years. In 1824, he added the South Portico for James Monroe, and he constructed the North Portico for Andrew Jackson from 1829 to 1830. Located at the country’s most well-known address, 1600 Pennsylvania Ave in Washington, DC, the White House is America’s most iconic home. Send a letter to the White House

As these changes occur, job duties will continue to determine overtime exemption status for most salaried employees. In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt began a major renovation of the White House, including the relocation of the President’s offices from the Second Floor of the Residence to the newly constructed temporary Executive Office Building (now known as the West Wing). The Roosevelt renovation was planned and carried out by the famous New York architectural firm McKim, Mead and White. Roosevelt’s successor, President William Howard Taft, had the Oval Office constructed within an enlarged office wing.

The White House kitchen has the capacity to prepare dinner for 140 guests and hors d’oeuvres for over 1,000. The White House’s attic was converted into a third floor during the Coolidge administration, and over the years, it has hosted a music room for President Clinton and a bedroom suite for Melania Trump. There is also a solarium, added by Grace Coolidge, with panoramic views of the Mall. The White House is both the home and workplace of the president of the United States, and it is the headquarters of the president’s principal staff members.

If you feel strongly about something, send an email to your congressman. Beautiful landscaping has graced the White House grounds since the administration of Thomas Jefferson. The South Lawn features over three dozen commemorative trees that date back to the 1870s. During the Kennedy administration, Rachel Lambert “Bunny” Mellon redesigned the White House gardens, including the famed Rose Garden outside the West Wing. The East Garden, also redesigned by Mellon, was later named in honor of Jacqueline Kennedy. First lady Michelle Obama added a 1,100-square-foot vegetable garden on the south grounds in 2009.

The general layout of the White House grounds today is based on the 1935 design by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. of the Olmsted Brothers firm, commissioned by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. During the Kennedy administration, the White House Rose Garden was redesigned by Rachel Lambert Mellon. Bordering the East Colonnade is the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, which was begun by Jacqueline Kennedy but completed after her husband's assassination. Italian artisans, brought to Washington to help in constructing the U.S. This was done to link the new portico with the earlier carved roses above the entrance. Overtime protections have been a critical part of the FLSA since 1938 and were established to protect workers from exploitation and to benefit workers, their families and our communities.

This letter should include details about why the individual wants to meet with the president and what topics they’d like to discuss if approved. With the right effort and creativity, there are unique ways to get your message across to the President of the United States. Sending gifts or donations is one way to make a statement that could potentially be heard by the Commander-in-Chief. That said, there are certain guidelines that need to be followed if you’re going to use an online forum as a platform for reaching out to the leader of the free world. For starters, avoid taking on any inflammatory language or rhetoric – these tend to have a polarizing effect which can cause more harm than good.

Less than fifty years after the Roosevelt renovation, the White House was already showing signs of serious structural weakness. President Harry S. Truman began a renovation of the building in which everything but the outer walls was dismantled. The reconstruction was overseen by architect Lorenzo Winslow, and in 1952, the Truman family moved back into the White House. The White House became one of the first wheelchair-accessible government buildings in Washington, D.C. When modifications were made during the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who used a wheelchair because of his paralytic illness. In the 1990s, Hillary Clinton, at the suggestion of the Visitors Office director, approved the addition of a ramp in the East Wing corridor, affording easier wheelchair access for the public tours and special events that enter through the secure entrance building on the east side.

Architectural & Interior Design Los Angeles

design experience

Your customer experience team can identify actions to take that would reduce friction in the buying process and help to reduce customer effort and increase revenue. Designing a great experience is about more than what you — or your customers — can see. It might be easy to see how navigation menus, workflows, and search filters can impact your users’ experience, but the underlying foundation is just as important.

What skills does a UX designer need?

A UX designer’s role in a project depends on the team size and project type. In larger organizations and complex products, you may have more specialist roles such as researcher, interface designer and UX writer. User experience (UX) design is the process design teams use to create products that provide meaningful and relevant experiences to users.

1 The difference between UX and UI design

In this course, you will gain a holistic understanding of visual design and increase your knowledge of visual principles, color theory, typography, grid systems and history. You’ll also learn why visual design is so important, how history influences the present, and practical applications to improve your own work. These insights will help you to achieve the best possible user experience. Emphasis in design principles refers to intentionally highlighting specific elements to draw attention and create a focal point.

From e-commerce websites to dating apps, from CRM software to web-based email clients, each and every online journey you take has been carefully designed by a UX professional. As the tech industry grows, the field of UX design is becoming increasingly varied. UX designers can find themselves working on a wide range of projects within various contexts.

Experience design relies on accurate prototypes to test ideas and hypotheses. The problem with traditional image-based design tools is they focus on visual design rather than interactivity. Your prototypes look great but don’t function like the final product, meaning designers don’t get accurate data. While user experience design refers to the end-user’s experience with a digital product, experience design goes beyond the product. It touches all the senses and it refers to the full customer journey, like experiencing customer service, sales, marketing, onboarding, and offboarding.

HCD has a much narrower focus and aims to create and improve products. Systems thinking looks at the larger picture and aims to change entire systems. Systems thinking has applications in various fields, such as medical, environmental, political, economic, human resources, and educational systems.

A design sprint is a 5-day intensive workshop where cross-functional teams aim to develop innovative solutions. “Hand” signifies the practical execution of ideas, the craftsmanship, and the skills necessary to turn concepts into tangible solutions. This includes the mastery of tools, techniques, and materials, as well as the ability to implement and execute design ideas effectively. Innovation doesn’t follow a linear path or have a clear-cut formula.

Agencies are seeing higher expectations for service delivery from the public and are trying to deliver a customer experience that’s on par with leading private-sector companies. With prototypes to hand, the UX designer will then conduct usability tests to see how users interact with the product. This shows whether or not the user can complete their desired tasks or if changes need to be made. This could mean anything from how a physical product feels in your hand to how straightforward the checkout process is when buying something online. The goal of UX design is to create easy, efficient, relevant, and all-around pleasant experiences for the user.

As products and services become more interlinked, experience design has become ever-more important as designers work to create enjoyable, meaningful experiences for people. Other people on the team have jobs like building the system behind the action (engineers) or understanding the viability of the action (product managers). The usability of the tool, however, including how the user understands the action on their end, is the domain of user experience. Coming from a design background not only means having a good grip on design terminology, but also that you’re likely to be familiar with the conventions and trends in web or app designs.

Similarly, UX designers don’t just focus on creating usable products but on other aspects of the user experience, such as pleasure, efficiency and fun. Consequently, there is no single definition of a good user experience. Instead, a good user experience meets a particular user’s needs in the specific context where they use the product. The experience design process uses identical design frameworks to UX using design thinking and a human-centered design approach. Visual and interactive elements play a pivotal role in experience design.

User research is a crucial element of design, providing invaluable insights about user behaviors, preferences, and pain points. By conducting extensive user research, designers can gain a clear picture of their target audience to make more informed decisions and craft user-centric experiences. Whatever stage you’re using it, experience design begins with the end-user in mind. To be truly effective, every experience must be user-centered and get your business what it needs. And the results, the data, allow you to validate assumptions, preferences, and actions.

For example, daylight constantly alters how we perceive colors, and different light sources like incandescent, LED, or fluorescent can shift color appearances. Also, colors can appear different depending on their background, a phenomenon known as simultaneous contrast. For an in-depth exploration of color's impact on design, watch the insightful video by Joann Eckstut on the topic. Show users where they’ve come from and where they’re headed with signposts/cues. Or read Kylie’s story of how she transitioned out of the hospitality industry to become a UX designer.

Detroits East Village Is Being Transformed Into an Art Hub The New York Times

binions steak house

For nostalgia reasons I thought it would be fun to go there. Since the city filed for bankruptcy in 2013, Detroit has experienced a significant revitalization, with a growing art scene centered largely in its downtown. Now in the East Village, a quiet neighborhood about a 15-minute drive from the skyscrapers built in the city’s automotive heyday, a new creative hub is coming into focus this spring. Binion's may not host the World Series of Poker anymore, but this historic steakhouse with its fantastic views is as good as ever. He quickly returns with a small saucer and a petite cup full of steaming hot, fragrant espresso. As an added touch, the drink includes a small wooden stirring stick with a generous helping of rock candy attached to one end.

The Lost Spirits Distillery and Its Fantastically Weird Restaurant Are Closing

Some are even slightly larger, able to accommodate up to eight adults, and all are in high demand. From the 24th floor of the hotel, the view is astounding, and it is no wonder that Binion’s is a premier destination for special events and romantic evenings. From our booth, we look out over the valley, directly past the Stratosphere Tower. This high up, we can see far off into the distance, until the bright lights of Las Vegas end and the dark silhouettes of the surrounding mountains begin. Binion’s Gambling Hall is an iconic reminder of a different time, a classic era when Fremont Street was the hottest and hippest place in Vegas.

Soups and Salads

Needless to say, we scrape our dishes clean before letting the diligent team of servers whisk away all evidence that a meal had been consumed here this evening. David, the man in charge of guest hospitality, leads us through the dining room to one of the plush semi-circle booths. The benches are deep red and slightly elevated so that each offers a perfect line of sight through the large, floor-to-ceiling windows. The table is built to be pulled out, much like a drawer, for added comfort and accessibility. David tells us that the entire restaurant is surrounded by windows, and for every window, there is a series of booths.

Can’t-Miss Las Vegas Entertainment Experiences

My friend chooses to keep things simple and orders the classic Iceberg Wedge with ripe tomatoes and sliced red onion served with his choice of blue cheese dressing. I don’t typically opt for salad, but this one catches my eye and sounds like an interesting combination of different flavors so I go for it. My first bite is very sweet and tart thanks to a fresh, ripe raspberry, but this flavor is soon overtaken by creamy blue cheese and the roasted crunch of pine nuts. It is obvious that every ingredient is at the peak of freshness, and to top off an already beautiful presentation, Sal offers to add fresh ground pepper to my liking. This salad is delicious and offers an unexpected range of flavors that work well to cleanse my palate in preparation for the next portion of this one-of-a-kind dinner experience. Our server greets us shortly after we are seated and introduces himself as Sal.

Binions Steakhouse

This fun and practical method for sweetening my coffee puts a smile on my face and the premium roast helps make just enough room to try a couple of desserts before we call it a night. Called Little Village, this hub includes new parks, cultural spaces, artist studios, affordable housing and hospitality services. The campus, which has the city and community’s blessing, is the work of Anthony and JJ Curis, the co-founders of the downtown gallery Library Street Collective. One of the best restaurants that we have eaten at. We plan on returning there on our next trip to Las Vegas. Anchoring Little Village is the Shepherd, a 110-year-old Romanesque-style deconsecrated church that the couple bought and repurposed with the help of the Brooklyn architects Peterson Rich Office.

It’s just a short drive from Denver—and an even shorter drive to the slopes.

He immediately pours our waters and asks us if there are any other drinks we would like to try. Unlike many restaurants, there is no list of cocktails; Binion’s has a traditional full bar capable of producing just about any drink the heart desires, save a few of the more exotic mixtures. Sal tells us that the bar is well known for its strong martinis, so my friend decides to test one out and asks for gin, extra dirty. Feeling like something a little more tropical, I go with a classic mai-tai, and while Sal hurries off to pass the info to the bartender, I take a moment to soak in my surroundings. The walls are deep burgundy, covered with a myriad of small golden leaflets and hung with classic black and white photos as well as beautiful original paintings.

Binion's cut prime rib was excellent!

Now, the renowned Downtown Strip has been converted into an enormous covered walkway, teaming with tourists, locals and various celebrity look-alikes. Among the vintage gift shops and various bars, the neon lights of Binion’s are easy to spot. Tonight, a friend and I are headed out to discover one of Downtown’s best kept secrets, the restaurant hidden away on the top floor of this classic hotel. Fremont Street, is only a ten minute drive from the strip, and with appetites at the ready, we make our way down Main Street in pursuit of the perfect meal. The ambience was old school, but the restaurant was not very busy.

What was once an off-the-wall request soon became a staple when word quickly spread among rodeo-goers, and I must say that I agree; it should be here to stay. For this dish, red roasted potatoes seem fitting as a side, and as I cut through the crispy breading of the large tail, I cannot believe how thick and tender the underlying lobster is. For added flavor, we also have a “sharon” sauce which is basically a traditional béarnaise with a tomato base and tarragon for extra kick.

All sharing options for:

Hunter S. Thompson stayed at the hotel and made it famous in his novel "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." In 1988, The Mint was sold off to Binion’s. Now its vintage Vegas décor and romantic atmosphere still keep diners coming in for the Creekstone Farms Midwestern corn-fed Black Angus beef aged 28 days and chicken fried lobster. After all the noise of the casinos, we were looking for someplace quiet to enjoy an evening meal. On the 24th floor, it seemed that every table had a great view of the city lights. The restaurant was full, but we could visit without shouting across the table. Our server was very friendly, efficient, and helpful, and the food was delicious.

David jokes that this is the “kids’ cut” since it is significantly smaller than the 24-ounce Binion’s Cut, but with the Chicken Fried Lobster still waiting, I feel no shame in choosing the smaller of the two. It isn’t long before our appetizers arrive, and we eagerly dig in. The first plate contains two large cakes of blended crab meat, breaded and pan fried to golden brown. For added flavor, the dish includes a side of hollandaise sauce and a fresh-sliced lemon half with a fine screen to keep the pulp out of the food.

Our family celebrated a birthday at the restaurant. Most of us had steaks that were cooked to perfection. The ambience was great for a mini family reunion. A look inside the former Top of the Mint with its 28-day dry-aged steaks and chicken fried lobster. I should start by telling why I picked this restaurant. It was one of the most amazing views in Vegas and still is.

Bring your friends and take a picture with the famous $1 million dollar cash pyramid! Binion’s Gambling Hall & Casino is a one of the last standing original casinos in Vegas and the birthplace of the World Series of Poker. For a romantic date, intimate dinner conversation, or simply to enjoy a refreshing cocktail from the world class bar, journey to Top of Binion’s Steakhouse at Binion’s Gambling Hall & Casino.

He returns with a fresh Apple Tart and the favored Chocolate Volcano. Being a true lover of chocolate, I don’t hesitate to snatch up a generous serving. The cake is super rich, moist and exploding with chocolate flavor. The liquid center, along with premium Häagen-Dazs vanilla ice cream, creates the ultimate classic pairing and I immediately fall in love. Not to leave any stone unturned, I also try the Apple Tart, and although it does not pack the same punch as the Chocolate Volcano, I do admit that it is delicious. The thick, crispy crust breaks open to reveal large slices of sweet, cinnamon spiced apples and a hefty scoop of vanilla ice cream drizzled with rich caramel sauce tops it off with a buttery, creamy finish.
